OK, I have FINALLY gotten LSB 2.029.25780 installed. On our dial up, it actually took two sessions of downloading of 5 hours and 9 hours. YESH, not everyone is on high speed!.

Now for the problem(s). First, I can't seem to move the elements that I have created in the old version to the new version. The titles are there, but no data. I click on one of the elements in the My Worship Resources screen and the edit content window is EMPTY. So, I tried exporting the data from the old and importing it to the new, and of course, the file is saved as one thing in the old and the new wants a different file. Couldn't you have made it easier to import by using the same file format ?????

Second, it seems like to make things work seamlessly between LSB and Word, you need to be using Word 2007. Why did you do that, many congregations can't afford to upgrade Word just because Micro$oft puts a a version with features we don't need. We're still using Office XP.

  2. We never intended for this release of Builder 2 to be usable by people on dial-up Internet and I'm honestly surprised that you attempted to do so. The sheer amount of Microsoft components and data you have to download is pretty huge, and we are targeting a disc-based release for early next year.

The data we use in Builder is converted from one file format to a completely different one in the move from 1 to 2, so it's not possible for us to cross-support exported elements.

We have been working for the last couple of weeks on trying to figure out why some users are experiencing weirdness in their move from Builder 1 to Builder 2 and will be publishing updates to solve this issue. When that is done, we will also add a tool to Builder 2 to allow you to bring your Builder 1 items over again in order to help those who were hit with this problem.

There are actually some problems with Word 2007 on the Microsoft side that we are now seeing after hitting wider release. We are investigating solutions (including filing bug reports with Microsoft) to try and solve these issues through workarounds.

The short answer as to why we are working with Office 2007 is that 2007 made a move to an open file standard for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In every case, writing to files intended for those programs is now markedly easier and produces better output than we could when we were writing to RTF and masking that with a .doc extension.

I would like to think that by utilizing the Microsoft Open License for Charities option, pretty much every congregation can afford to update to Office 2007, which I make a personal recommendation for due to the amazing rework of the interface.

    Ryan,
I am sorry if my comment about downloading came off as a real complaint. I wanted to use LSB 2.0 and was willing to take the time, just didn't realize how much it would take.

Second, I am still confused about the Elements. The titles were moved over, but not the data. That struck me as unusual. Hopefully this is something you can fix. Otherwise, it means retyping all the elements that we've added to LSB.

Finally, I was totally unaware of Microsoft's Charitable Licensing Program. I will look into this for our congregation.

  4. Jeff,

Not a problem. I meant to convey my actual surprise that you were brave enough to download the whole thing over dial-up. I commend and applaud your dedication.

What you are seeing is a symptom of the problem. We are working to give you that re-import tool in the near future, which would indeed bring the content over, since that's what's missing. You are correct that anything you would need in the short-term will have to be re-keyed into Builder.

The Open Charity license program is one of the most awesome things available that no one seems to know about. It's great for small churches, and even better for larger churches, as it's a per-license purchasing structure. It's a great discount off retail for Microsoft software, and even includes things like operating system upgrades and Office. I hope your experience with it will be positive.

  5. The re-import tool is now included with every installation of Lutheran Service Builder.
