Component SQL Server 2008 Express Edition has failed to install with the following error message:
"An error occurred attempting to install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition."

The following components were successfully installed:
    - CPH Software Updater
    - .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
    - Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package 2.0
    - Windows Installer 4.5

The following components failed to install:
    - SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

See the setup log file located at 'C:\DOCUME~1\REV~1.LAN\LOCALS~1\Temp\VSDED.tmp\install.log' for more information.

  2. This is normally caused by an earlier version of SQL server residing on your computer, even if you don't know it.

If you go to Add/Remove Programs, is there anything marked "Microsoft SQL Server"?

I have the same problem. Installation of LSB 2.0 seems to go fine until it tries to install the SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. My system OS is Windows XP SP3. I get the following alert after each time I try to install LSB 2.0 (this was my second attempt):

    --------------
An error occurred while installing system components for Lutheran Service Builder 2. Setup cannot continue until all system components have been successfully installed.

Component SQL Server 2008 Express Edition has failed to install with the following error message:
"An error occurred attempting to install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition."

The following components failed to install:

See the setup log file located at 'C:\DOCUME~1\TLC\LOCALS~1\Temp\VSD5.tmp\install.log' for more information.
    ----------------------------

I noticed in another thread that the question was asked if another version of SQL Server was installed. I looked and SQL Server 2005 was installed on my machine. I uninstalled the old version before trying to install LSB 2.0 again, but got the same error message.

The contents of the log file are as follows (sorry for the long post):

  4. You can always try to install SQL Server Express yourself using the package you can find here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=58ce885d-508b-45c8-9fd3-118edd8e6fff&DisplayLang=en

It's not nearly as user-friendly, but it can still get the job done.

To double-check and make sure you've eliminated the SQL Server packages from your computer, you can restart it, then try to install Builder again. Secondly, you can CTRL+ALT+DEL and then go to the Processes tab and look for anything with the letters "sql" in it and then terminate that process. That's cleared it up for some people.

I'm thinking about trying to come up with some detailed documentation on this. This is unfortunate that we're seeing this type of failure when installing a Microsoft-standard installation package (we don't even create the Installer for SQL Server 2008).

  5. I've removed all the SqQL's including the 2008 which seemed to instal and still had this issue. I am going to try the link you gave and install it seperately and then give it another go.

  6. When you get a message like this:

See the setup log file located at 'C:\DOCUME~1\TLC\LOCALS~1\Temp\VSD5.tmp\install.log' for more information.

(In this case, DOCUME~1 is Documents and Settings, and LOCALS~1 is Local Settings.)

...could you retrieve that file and send it to lsbsupport@cph.org with information on what's going on? We need to collect some more information for Microsoft on what we're seeing. I have a bug report ticket out with them right now for their installer.

I'm also working on some documentation for what to do when you have this problem. I need to gather as much information as possible regarding the roadblocks people are seeing on their systems so I can make sure the documentation is reasonably complete.

  7. I have a preliminary documentation page written up here:

    http://cphconnect.org/builder/docs/Installation_fails_when_installing_SQL_Server_2008_Express

I haven't created any screenshots to go with it yet; that's something I'm going to work on either late today or tomorrow.

Please offer feedback if you have attempted the instructions there and success/failure.

Thank you, Ryan, for all your work on this, and for your documentation page.

I have tried installing the stand alone installer that you linked to above, but it did not work for me. For me, it doesn't seem to matter if SQL Server 2005 is installed or not. I even tried reinstalling SQL Server 2005 and choosing the update option in the 2008 installer, but that did not work either.

As it is, I'm going to have to reinstall my OS anyway, so after that it will be interesting to see if it goes better.

    Thanks again!

Just to update: after a fresh install of my OS (Windows XP), I was able to get LSB 2.0 to install. Yeah!

After trying the various suggestions to get it to install (before I reinstalled my OS), the LSB installation would always fail during the SQL Server 2008 part of the process. I did notice, however, that when it installed properly, I was asked to restart the computer during the SQL installation. When the installation failed, I was never asked to restart. Maybe that means something . . .

Now to find the thread that deals with why I have to reactivate every time I open LSB 2.0 (and on dial-up, that gets a bit cumbersome).

    Peace, Stephen

I tried again and had more progress, but it stopped at the "feature selection" stage. This seems to be the best message I can retreive:
