  1. I am in need of basic training. I am sorry to have to post here - I did try the online manual first and typed in "My Worship Resources," but did not find what I was looking for. If some of this is covered in the manual, just give me the link and I am good to go.

My question is on the "My Worship Resources" screen. The good: after working on a month's worth of services I am starting to get a feel for how SB2 works. I am working on our Ash Wednesday service, and I was able to go into "My Worship Resources," type in the "Litany" that I like to use for Ash Wednesday and it saved automatically under "common elements" and I was able to find it again by typing "litany" in the search when I wanted to insert an element in the "Plan This Service" view.

So, all is well. My question is out of curiosity. In "My Worship Resources" the first column is a list of resources and the last column is the view to edit the resources. What I am curious about are the middle column and the tabs that read "general" and "advanced." What are they for?

  2. Each control in the two tabs has a purpose:

    Type

This control defines basic characteristics of an element. For most text entry, you will want to use "default". Propers, Readings, and Collects draw their information from their relative databases and/or lectionaries, and allow you to construct "templates" that can alter the final output of that material and mix dynamic content with static content.

    Caption:

This is the "title" or "heading" that will appear on the left margin above the element you are creating. Note that it can be different from the name you give the element in your Common Elements list. This attribute can be changed during the service planning process.

    Hide caption:

Users have the ability to define either per-service or per-element whether or not Captions will appear above each element. This control has three states. No fill means that the element will by default NOT show its caption. A solid fill means that the element will follow the default settings as configured by the user (show/don't show). A check fill means that the element will by default SHOW its caption. The default setting is a solid fill.

    Override default subcaption:

Elements can also include information on the right margin, such as page numbers, hymn numbers, or Scripture citations. This is normally determined by the element type (e.g., a hymn will usually display the selected stanzas). You can override this right-margin subcaption by checking this box and entering text in the field that appears. This text will then always appear by default above the element, and follow the Subcaption style as defined in the active stylesheet.

    Shared role:

You may have noticed that Builder will suggest for users replacements for given elements (a hymn that can replace an Alleluia, for example). To enable your selected element to appear in that list of suggestions, select the appropriate "shared role" from this drop-down menu.

    Key and Tune:

These boxes are used in the case that you are entering a liturgical element that draws on a tune so it can be correctly cross-referenced in searches.

    Related Scripture:

Enter Scripture passages that are related to the currently edited element. This will provide options for the subcaption choice (control not yet available), and will also inform Builder for searches.

    Related Topics:

    Used for topical searches.

    Removed during seasons:

Lutheran Service Builder contains the ability to warn users when they are attempting to utilize an element that is out-of-season. Check the seasons in which the element does NOT belong, and the appropriate warning will appear.

You may also check the "remove without asking" option below and Builder will simply delete the element upon loading it during the selected season. This is primarily used when creating custom liturgies.

  3. Something to keep in mind when using the editing tools you now have in Builder 2—which are greatly expanded from those in Builder 1—is that those are the same tools we use here to construct the standard services that are included in Builder.

To my knowledge, there is nothing we have done in the included services that you can't do using these tools. It takes a little experimentation and some questions to figure out some of the more interesting things that are possible, but the toolset is really rather flexible, and it's entirely possible for you to create completely new liturgies and service orders from scratch using this system.
